Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements
Education: You must have a high school diploma or its equivalent (a foreign diploma may require translation and evaluation).
Character: Demonstrate good character, trustworthiness, honesty, and integrity.
To work as a real estate agent in the United States, you need to obtain a real estate license in the state where you plan to practice, as licensing requirements are determined at the state level. Real estate agents help clients buy, sell, or rent properties and must be knowledgeable about the local laws and regulations in their area.
New Jersey doesn’t recognize licenses from other states, so all applicants must complete the full licensing process, even if previously licensed elsewhere. Be prepared to follow all state-specific steps to obtain your real estate salesperson license.
Enroll in and complete a 75-hour pre-licensure course at an REC-approved real estate school approved by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission (REC).
At least three hours must focus on "ethics and ethical conduct" as required by N.J.S.A. 45:15-10.
Course format: Online or in-person options are available, provided the school is REC-approved.
Practice tests and flashcards are helpful for exam preparation.
After finishing the course, you have one year to pass the licensing exam and submit your application.
