Earn a High School Diploma or GED
A high school diploma or GED is required to enter a plumbing apprenticeship or degree program. Courses in math, science, and shop are helpful.
Plumbers install, repair, and maintain piping systems, fixtures, and appliances that facilitate water, gas, and waste flow in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Their work ensures safety, efficiency, and compliance with local plumbing codes and regulations.
In New Jersey, becoming a licensed plumber requires a multi-step process: completing a state-approved apprenticeship (or relevant degree), gaining journeyman experience, passing the Master Plumber exams, and obtaining a $3,000 surety bond. All plumbers performing work must be licensed by the NJ State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers.
