Obtain a High School Diploma or GED

A high school diploma or GED is required for entry into an HVAC apprenticeship or degree program. Courses in math, physics, and shop are useful.

Complete a Registered Apprenticeship or HVAC Degree Program

Enroll in a registered HVAC apprenticeship (typically 4-5 years) or a relevant degree at a technical college. New Jersey apprenticeship programs can be found via the NJ Department of Labor Apprenticeship Finder or local unions like UA Local 9.
  • Programs combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction (about 8,000 hours OJT + 576 hours classroom)

Gain Journeyperson Experience

After finishing an apprenticeship or degree, work as a journeyperson under a licensed HVAC contractor for at least 1 year. You must log supervised hours before being eligible for the master license exam.

Pass the Business and Trade Exams

Schedule and pass the required state exams:

Obtain State HVACR Contractor License

Apply for your HVACR Contractor License via the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs.
