A high school diploma or GED is required for entry into an HVAC apprenticeship or degree program. Courses in math, physics, and shop are useful.
An HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technician installs, maintains, and repairs commercial and residential HVAC equipment to ensure optimal indoor air quality and comfort. Responsibilities include diagnosing system malfunctions, performing energy-efficiency upgrades, and maintaining accurate records.
In New Jersey, aspiring HVAC technicians must complete a registered apprenticeship or obtain a relevant degree, gain journeyperson experience, pass business and trade exams, and secure insurance. All HVAC contractors must be licensed through the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. Learn more about licensing and application details below.
