Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements

Age: You must be at least 21 years old.
Experience: Accumulate one of the following:
  • Three (3) years of work experience in the elevator, escalator, and moving walkway industry and have passed either the NAEC CET Certification examination or the NEIEP examination.
  • At least 6,000 hours of work experience within the last five years in New Jersey without direct and immediate supervision installing, constructing, altering, servicing, repairing, testing, or maintaining elevators, escalators, and moving walkways.

Obtain Required Certifications

Depending on your experience path, you must pass one of the following certification exams:

Prepare Documentation of Experience

    • Proof of insurance or bonds issued covering you.

Complete the Application Process

Submit your application to the New Jersey Elevator, Escalator, and Moving Walkway Mechanics Licensing Board:

Pass the Licensing Examination

Upon approval of your application, you will be scheduled to take the New Jersey Elevator Mechanic licensing examination. Prepare by reviewing relevant study materials and technical codes.
